In this tutorial, we are going to learn how to solar panel works, and make a cell phone charger with solar panels.

It just looks like this, about A4 paper size.

It supports 5V and 600mA.


Although it has a low output, maybe you can use this to charge your extra battery on camping.

Let's get started!

I didn't take any picture when I made this before, so I will offer the image to you.


Supply list

This is the solar panel which is the flower of solar power generation.

My model provides the 6V and 300mA output, but sometimes it provides 7V.

We need 4 pieces of solar panel.


This is a Schottky diode.

The 1N5819 model is in use and it helps to prevent reverse current.


This is an LM317 DC-DC step-down module.

I will connect two pairs in series and then connect them in parallel, so the maximum output can be 12V.

Therefore, we need this module for step down to 5V.


And this is a step up DC-DC 5V 600mA mobile charge module.

It will boost up the lower power to 5V with 600mA output.

And it will help you to charge your mobile phone.


This is just for fix the solar panel together.

(You can use the other material instead)

1. Arrange.

It is a basic design arrangement.

It doesn't need to do same as I did, anyway a will explain on my own


2. Fix each solar panel together.

Fix each solar panels with the glue gun.


3. Serial connection.

Only one + pole and one - pole of two panels should be connected for serial connection.


4. Connecting in parallel.

Now we should connect the same poles to each other that you have not connected yet.

At this time, connect Schottky diode to VCC part.

(Please refer to the above picture for the direction of the diode.)


5. Connecting Modules.

It is the last part of this tutorial!

Connect other modules.

There is no problem if you connect polarity to each other, but make sure that connect the step-down module with input and output.

This is the behind side of the final result.



It takes 21 minutes to charge 7%...

It is too slow to use in real life.

As I said before, just use this for charge your extra battery.. :)


If you want fast charge, make all solar panel connecting in parallel.

(And also it need 2 more Schottky diode, total 4.)

Then you can get a 1.2A output.

I want to make a panel that support 1.2A output and also support waterproof when I go to vacation again later.
